01What was announced
In September 2023, Amazon announced an investment in Anthropic of up to $4 billion, completed during 2024. In November 2024 Amazon announced a further $4 billion, bringing its disclosed total to $8 billion. Amazon has said it does not hold a controlling stake.
Alongside the equity, the companies announced commercial arrangements covering AWS as a primary cloud partner for certain workloads, distribution of Claude via Amazon Bedrock, and use of Amazon's custom Trainium accelerators.
02Why the structure matters
Compute is Anthropic's largest cost. Arrangements that convert investor capital into infrastructure capacity reduce financing risk but concentrate supplier exposure.
Anthropic has also maintained relationships with Google Cloud and, as reported in late 2025, with Microsoft Azure and Nvidia — a deliberate multi-provider posture.
