01The three tiers
Anthropic released Claude 3 in three sizes: Haiku for low-latency, low-cost tasks; Sonnet as the general-purpose default; and Opus as the highest-capability tier. The same tiering has continued through later generations.
The launch also introduced image and document understanding across the family, broadening enterprise document-processing use cases.
02Commercial significance
Tiering allowed Anthropic to price against a wide range of workloads rather than competing only at the top of the capability curve, which matters for usage-based revenue where cost per token drives adoption.
