01The arrangement

Google invested in Anthropic and entered into a cloud arrangement under which Anthropic uses Google Cloud infrastructure. Google subsequently participated in further commitments, and Anthropic has continued to use Google's TPU accelerators alongside other hardware.

Investment figures reported by news organisations at the time were not always confirmed in full by either company. Where amounts are cited, treat them as reported rather than audited.

02Why it mattered

The structure — equity capital paired with a commercial compute commitment — became the dominant funding pattern for frontier AI labs. It reduces the cash a lab must raise for infrastructure but ties a portion of its cost base to a specific provider.

For anyone assessing Anthropic's ownership, these arrangements matter: strategic investors may hold economic interests without conventional control rights, and terms are not generally public.
