01What changed

Claude 3.5 Sonnet was released in June 2024 with improved reasoning and code generation relative to the previous generation, at the mid-tier price point rather than the top tier.

Anthropic also shipped interface features for working with generated artefacts, which made the assistant more practical for iterative development work.

02Why it matters commercially

Developer tooling produces high, recurring token consumption and tends to be sticky once embedded in a team's workflow. Independent surveys and third-party tool integrations through 2024 and 2025 repeatedly showed Claude models with strong share in coding assistants.

This concentration is also a risk: it ties a meaningful share of revenue to one workload category in a market where competitors iterate quickly.
